Heavy Snowfall Blankets Yorkshire and East Coast, Causing Widespread Disruption
YORKSHIRE & EAST COAST – November 20, 2025 – Parts of Yorkshire and the East Coast woke up to a significant blanket of snow on Wednesday and Thursday, November 19th and 20th, bringing picturesque winter scenes but also considerable disruption to travel and local communities.
Overnight snowfall, which continued throughout much of Thursday, saw higher ground across the North York Moors and parts of the Yorkshire Dales particularly affected, with several inches accumulating. Coastal towns, though experiencing lesser depths, also saw persistent flurries, creating hazardous conditions
Traffic Chaos on Roads
The sudden change in weather led to immediate challenges for commuters. Major routes such as the A169 through the North York Moors, and sections of the A19 and A64, experienced significant delays and treacherous driving conditions. Police forces across North Yorkshire urged motorists to avoid non-essential travel and exercise extreme caution.
"We've seen numerous reports of vehicles struggling on untreated roads, particularly on inclines," stated a spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police. "Gritters have been out in full force, but the continuous snowfall has made keeping up challenging. Please, if you don't need to travel, stay home."
Several minor roads, especially those leading to isolated villages, became impassable, trapping some residents and preventing deliveries. Public transport services, including some bus routes, faced cancellations and severe delays, further complicating morning commutes.
