Tap & Die Sets

There is a lot of discussion on the difference of High Speed Steel and Carbon Steel, our research indicates the following: A carbon tap will keep an edge longer than a HSS because they are harder. However it is more likely, even with the greatest of care taken that a carbon steel tap is easier to break which can cause major problems to removing from a workpiece. On smaller sizes and using common materials like mild steel, brass etc carbon steel should be fine and for cleaning threads are perfect. In our opinion our VCOILTAPK05 is a excellent engineering choice for a metric set, using circular dies made by Volkel in Germany.  A good all round performer which has unf and bsp dies in carbon steel is the Draper 79204. Another metric split die set offering tunsten steel taps and dies is the Sealey AK303.
